The Moffat Hills

Introduction
Moffat is a market town in the centre of the Southern Uplands. It's a short distance from the M74 and so it's very easy to reach both from the central belt of Scotland and from England. Despite its ease of access, few people walk the hills here. Nevertheless there are three Corbetts up for grabs here.

The hills near Megget Stone

The hills are much smoother and grassier than the hills of Galloway. Few cliffs & outcrops exist on these barren slopes and paths can often be noted by their absence. In spite of these features, the hills command wide open views both north to the central belt and south to the Lake District. They are quite remote hills, probably taking a day to cross from one road to another.

The best place to tackle the three Corbetts is from a deep Glen linking the Talla reservoir to the west with the Megget reservoir to the east. I parked close to the Megget Stone - at the watershed between the two Lakes and tackled the Corbett to the north - Broad Law. Broad Law is marred by aerial development - some phone masts and an aircraft VOR beacon. As such, all aircraft approaching Edinburgh from the south fly over this hill. Despite the summit intrusions, the southward view towards Hart Fell is outstanding.

The view northwest from Hart Fell

Hart Fell is one of the Corbetts to the south of Megget Stone. It's a very complex massif and in my opinion it's the best hill in the Moffat region. The hill throws out a south easterly ridge with a fine escarpment and the route eastwards to the next Corbett, White Coomb is rough, boggt and quite complex (though there is a guiding fence all the way).

To conclude, this area is nice. The three main tops will take a weekend to do but you'll have to buy four Landranger maps to complete the walk (Ordnance Survey conspiracy theories anyone? - download the maps from multimap for free and stitch together in photoshop!).
